How to Choose Baby Nursery Bedding

September 29th, 2009 admin No comments

Your baby’s room is a special place. A place of security and rest for your new child. And somewhere that is a sanctuary for you both. You want this room to be comforting and attractive, and an important element for making it so, as a focal point of this space, is the baby nursery bedding.

We recommend choosing the nursery bedding for your baby before any other decisions about the room are made. This will help you to develop a theme, and complementary furniture and decor, for the rest of the space. When purchasing baby nursery bedding, there are lots of options to choose from. To help you narrow down your choices and make the decision easier, we’ve outlined a few key factors to consider.

Patterns & Fabrics

There are many designs that you can choose from, from sports themes to polka dots to cute animal patterns. Remember that even though your child won’t care about his/her surroundings until after one or two years, you’ll want a look that is soothing and peaceful.

We recommend softer colors and neutral looks, one that will provide a calming environment to your baby and something that you won’t get tired of quickly. However, some argue that brighter and bolder colors will help stimulate your baby during these formative years.

Other considerations include quality and softness of the fabric. Organically grown fabrics and thread count of at least 385 are good choices. Generally cotton is the most popular fabric, but wool and bamboo/cotton blends can be used too. You’ll also want to make sure that the fabric is not coated with formaldehyde, or other chemicals that may cause skin irritation, allergies or respiratory issues.

Safety

Safety is another top concern when it comes to baby nursery bedding. If the mattress is too soft, your baby may find it hard to establish a comfortable sleeping position. It must be a firm and tight-fitting mattress.

Look for a safety code on the baby bedding set. This code is BS EN 716-1. You’ll have a better chance of getting quality items and safe materials by buying baby nursery bedding from reputable manufacturers and trusted stores.

Don’t put too many toys, blankets or pillows in the crib that could suffocate your baby. You’ll also want a baby monitor and an air purifier. Dusting the room on a regular basis can help alleviate breathing problems as well.

Expense

Buying baby nursery bedding and other related items for the baby’s room can be an expensive proposition. You’ll need to budget for pillows, sheets, bumper pads, blankets, diaper stackers, mobiles, lamp shades, valances, toys, stuffed animals, rugs, a changing table, seating, lighting and more. This can add up to hundreds, even thousands of dollars.

Remember that there’s always an economical solution to decorating your nursery. Try painting instead of wallpaper, installing shelves if you need more storage, or making your own curtains out of fabric. You can also check for markdowns and clearance sales of baby nursery bedding, as well as great deals on unused sets for sale on eBay.

Decorating your baby’s nursery should be an activity done with both you and your child in mind, and we hope you will enjoy putting together your baby’s room centered on baby nursery bedding that you will love and that will provide a safe haven for your newborn, without breaking the bank.

Baby Shower Gift – Some Great Tips

September 20th, 2009 admin No comments

The tradition of baby showers is long standing in the US and is also becoming popular in other countries as well. The objective is to have an all girl get together and celebrate the new life which is about to enter the world, by giving the mom-to-be a baby shower gift. But what kind of gift should you buy and why? Let’s examine some possibilities.

Generally the gifts will fall into one of two categories; gifts for mom and gifts for the baby. If you prefer to buy a gift for the mom they why not consider something that will make her life easier when the baby is born. The baby is likely to not to sleep through the night for a while and a home made voucher for a night at a health spa whilst you look after the baby for one night can make a very welcome gift if mom is prepared to leave baby for the short duration. Another idea is to take along some frozen home made meals so that good nutritious food is available at busy times when the baby arrives since there will be plenty of these!

You might want to consider pooling together with all the other attendees of the baby shower and buying a larger gift with the increased resource. How about a professional photography session with mom and baby – these can be expensive but will provide a fantastic memento of this unique time in a woman’s life. It could be a family photograph with dad involved as well. Don’t underestimate asking the father for ideas for what to buy since he is likely to know what his partners needs are and what she would really appreciate.

If the mom already has children the consider something that involves them in the gift. The demands of looking after a baby often mean that a woman has less time to give to older offspring and this can make them resentful of the baby’s arrival if not managed carefully. A gift that actually provides for the whole family can therefore help to unite and bond the family and integrate the new arrival. For example you could contribute towards a weekend break for the family at a kid friendly resort that has lots of activities for the older children. This will allow them to enjoy the break whilst giving mom and dad time to be with each other and the baby and enjoy this wonderful time.

If you prefer to but a gift for the baby then give it some careful thought. Classic books can be a good choice, and a selection of such books, one for each of their life to the age to a key age such as 21 can be a great and long lasting present, particularly if you think about the titles carefully and match them with the age. Another idea is music, since the sense of hearing is the most developed sense in young children and this can have soothing effects when nothing else seems to work. One example was a mom who received a tape recording of the sounds of a vacuum cleaner. The giver explained that this sound seemed to soothe a baby and to “try it and see” The mom was cynical at first but she tried it and it worked. An unusual gift maybe – but what would a young mother give for peace and tranquility in the early months?

Buying the Perfect Baby Bed

The sleeping arrangements for babies are even more important than that of adults. Recent studies have suggested that a 1 month old baby will sleep for between 15 and 16 hours each day and by the time the baby is a year old, then they still require almost 14 hours. It is essential, therefore, to make sure you get the right baby bed.

The first consideration should always be your baby’s safety. Whilst there are numerous regulations for cot manufacturers to comply with, the best guardian of these is the proud parent. Think very, very carefully before buying an old or used crib at a flea market or garage sale. Safety standards are improving all the time and a crib of any significant age will often not reach modern standards. If you want to read more detail then take a look on the National Safety Council website for more information.

The mattress is also an important point to consider. It should be quite firm and fit snugly inside the crib. Gaps between the crib railings and the mattress provide excellent finger traps for the unwary and therefore essential that the mattress fits really well, all the way around. The most common accident statistic in infants is the simple fall, often from a crib or bed. Always make sure that the crib has an effective safety rail which fits all the way around the bed. Some accidents have happened when the child gets its head stuck between a wall and the bed and this often proves fatal if they are not discovered immediately.

There is also some evidence that very soft mattresses have contributed to cases of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome and whilst this evidence is far from conclusive, why take the risk?

Secondly consider the options that the crib has to add accessories such as mobiles and other items that are intended to stimulate the child. This stimulation is extremely important for a child and whatever you attach to the crib should be capable of being secured securely and also be adjustable to keep it far enough away from grasping hands and hungry mouths. The accessories come in all shapes ands sizes with varying methods of attachment so look at what you might want to attach and the fixture method before purchase.

Thirdly consider the type of crib you need. Many have sides that you can slide up and down to enable you to attend to the baby without reaching over the guard rail and exposing yourself to injury. Think also about available storage. Many cribs come with an option of drawers positioned under the mattress and these should come with appropriate safety locks so that the baby is not tempted to explore.

The final aspect is to consider the price and color/style of the crib. Although baby beds are expensive, the best will last a considerable length of time if looked after and don’t forget that it is the place where they will spend most of their time in the early years.

Buying Baby Blankets

Keeping your baby warm and safe is an important part of being a parent and a significant factor is that your baby will likely spend around 14 hours each day sleeping. It is important to make sure that baby is comfortable and consider a number of factors before purchasing baby blankets.

The correct material is one important aspect. The best choice is generally 100% natural fiber such as cotton, since this material allows the air to circulate freely and prevents the baby becoming too hot. This is an important factor since overheating has been identified as one of the risk factors in Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The material should also be tightly woven to avoid any strands unraveling and providing a choking risk to the little one. Remember also that mishaps are common at this age and therefore the blanket should be capable of being washed thoroughly. A nice silk print may appear to be beautiful but cleaning it if it is heavily soiled will be expensive and may be impossible.

Cotton remains the most popular choice, and more recently organic cotton has found favor. This is cotton produced without pesticides and some studies have shown that this is an important factor because pesticides can cause allergic reactions and also skin problems in infants. Another popular choice is faux fur. These are very warm and being made from a polyester nylon mix, they can be washed easily at quite an elevated temperature. Children also appear to like the feel of the material since it is very soft and comforting.

Children seem to get attracted to particular blankets (think of Linus in Charlie Brown!) for no apparent reason, research has suggested this could be a specific odor or even specific color patterns but either way try and buy blankets in pairs to ensure you have a backup if one is damaged or cannot be effectively cleaned. This will also be cheaper since many manufacturers sell them in pairs.

Baby blankets are also one of the most popular items to personalize. They can provide a valued heirloom which can be passed from generation to generation. Some people even add each baby’s name to the blankets as a permanent reminder of each owner throughout the years. If you want to buy such a keepsake then be prepared to spend a little money. They are often edged with real silk or satin around the borders and this inflates the price substantially over the common cotton variety.

The baby blanket is also commonly used to swaddle a baby. This means that the baby is wrapped quite tightly in the blanket and this appears to make them feel more secure, which in turn makes them sleep more soundly. It is thought that this is because the tight bound feeling is indicative of the sensations in the womb. Some babies do prefer their arms and legs to be kept free of the swaddle but this is much rarer than those who feel secure by being completely enveloped.
